This is the foundation. The groundwork that has to be done before you can take further steps on the yoga path: building up your Sadhana, your spiritual practice, i.e. being aware of your behavior, thoughts and emotions on a daily basis in order to live as pure as possible.
The Sutras of Patanjali describe the theory and practice of yoga and are one of the best known yoga scriptures in the West. The first two steps of Patanjali's eightfold path are the Yamas and Niyamas.
By studying the history of yoga you will learn more about the origins of the different movements and philosophies of yoga.
